We all believe in something, don’t we? You might believe that family is the most important thing in life. You might believe that education is the key to making our society a better place. Others believe that there is probably no God or that if there is, he or she is mostly irrelevant to everyday life.
Here at Eatons Hill Presbyterian Church we believe in certain things. Some of these beliefs will undoubtedly coincide with the things you hold as most true and precious. But perhaps there will also be beliefs we have that will challenge your current thinking. We hold to these truths with conviction but without conceit. We invite you to consider these beliefs and we welcome a conversation with you.
A first step to understand what we believe at Eatons Hill Presbyterian Church is to listen to any of our Bible talks that are given each week. Then you’ll discover what we regularly teach and the sort of church that we are.
In summary, we’re a church that treats the Bible as God’s Word to us and as such is our supreme authority in life. In fact our conviction is that the teachings of the Bible don’t take away from living life today, but in fact enhance life and lead to wisdom and contentment. And we believe Jesus Christ is the centre point for God’s dealing with the world. Jesus, as God’s own Son, came to die to bring people back into relationship with God and He physically rose again to be Lord and Judge over this world which He deeply loves.
As a Presbyterian church we are protestant and hold to the theological teachings that came out of the reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries. We are firmly of the reformation tradition which has five key convictions:
Scripture alone is our highest authority for what we do as a church and for how we live as believers. We are not confined to traditions of a church or denomination. We want to teach the Bible clearly so that we might see people growing as followers of Jesus.
We are saved by grace alone, through faith. We invite people to fully depend on what Jesus did when He died on the cross for our sin. Our assurance for life and eternity is not found in our religious activity, moral living or self-righteousness, but solely rests on Christ’s redeeming work for us.
We are saved by grace as a gift from God. We are incapable by ourselves of making our way back to God and so out of unimaginable love, God has done it all to reconcile people to Himself. Perfect Jesus took on the death we deserve so that we can have the life that He deserves. We live with heart-filled thankfulness for all that God has done for us.
Christ alone is our Saviour and King. There is no other way to find true life but through what Jesus has done for us. Because Jesus alone is our Saviour we don’t need any human priest or spiritual guru who might use manipulation and abuse for their own purposes. Only Jesus takes us to God and helps us in the midst of life’s struggles and hardships.
Everyone who wants others to worship them is foolish and proud. But not so with God who is perfect in every way. It is right and good to keep Him at the centre of our lives. We want to worship God with lives of faith and obedience and we do this in all such spheres of life: family, work, leisure and church life. We want more and more people to know how great and glorious God is, so we share the message of Jesus with others.
In addition, as a Presbyterian church, those who give leadership to our church called ‘elders’ (nothing to do with being elderly!) accept the Westminster Confession of Faith as a summary of the key teachings of the Bible, with the explanations contained in the Declaratory Statement. The Westminster Confession of Faith is one of the summaries of doctrine that emerged out of the Protestant Reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries.
